Business Day‘s Karl Gernetzky has written about the Department of Basic Education’s second annual national assessment on pupil’s maths and literacy levels which shows a very low standard of understanding.
The assessment highlights the dire state of education with Grade 9 students scoring an average of 12.7% in maths and 35% in their first additional language for literacy. The results also show a stark regional difference, an issue that is examined in The Low Achievement Trap: Comparing Schools in Botswana and South Africa which examines why some schools falter while others succeed.
Grade 9 pupils have registered a dismal average score of 12.7% in mathematics and 35% in first additional language in the Department of Basic Education’s second annual national assessments of pupils’ mathematics and literacy abilities.
The outcomes, released on Monday, showed a general improvement in Grades 1 to 6 but poor results for Grade 9 pupils tested for the first time.
